Hi,

I was wondering if anyone good at reading kernel panic dumps can tell me what's going on here please? I had previously got down to the diagnosis that the spinning drive part of the fusion drive was dying, but now that I'm booting from an external SSD, that's no longer apparently the case.

I come back to my desk to find that the iMac is completely shut down around once a day, with a 'Your computer shut down...' message each time.

Panic log attached, I'd love to find out what it is so that I can fix it (or at least manage it)

Thanks, Tom

These are not the complete log of the kernel panic. A normal kernel panic generates a lot more details. I really can't see what's wrong in these logs.
Hi, thanks for helping — these were the logs from the report sent to apple. where can I find the longer form panic logs please?

OP --

You haven't told us what year your iMac was made, also the SIZE of the drive inside.
Are you booting and running from the external SSD all the time now?

That said, do you still keep some files on the internal fusion drive that are not stored anywhere else? Or... are they all on the SSD, as well?

Why I'm asking:
If you're using the SSD for a boot drive and for all your important files, you could ERASE the internal fusion drive. Then, test it using disk utility.

I see several choices possible:
a. If the fusion drive tests ok after erasing, use it as a "non-critical extra storage" drive (but have it backed up, just in case)
b. you could "split" the fusion drive into separate SSD and HDD drives. Then test each of them. If one is ok but the other reports errors, use the good one, and just leave the problem drive "empty in place".

Hi thanks for your help.

It's a Late 2013 iMac 21.5 (iMac14,1) with 1TB fusion drive. The fusion drive is currently not being used at all — not booted and not mounted, and hasn't been in a few weeks. The external SSD appears to be running fine on the USB 3.0 connection, and that's what leads me to a conclusion that it's not disk I/O related (as it's a completely different I/O than before).

Something is causing a kernel panic every 24-48 hours. Every so often the whole system locks up (even the spinning beach ball stops spinning and the cursor is unresponsive) for a minute or so and then comes back to life as if everything was normal, and every so often a full-screen black graphical glitch passes over the screen for less than a second. This happens maybe twice a day.

And the rest of the time it's fine. It's perfectly fine and I can spend all day doing fairly intensive Illustrator/Photoshop/C4D/After Effects work without any worries. I'd love to find out what process is causing the panic and either mitigate it or fix it.

It really tells nothing about the source of the kernel panic :/

Try running the diagnostic tool (https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT202731).

If diagnostic finds nothing, backup your data to external drive. Boot on the latest available OS for your Mac using Option-⌘-R (https://support.apple.com/en-ca/HT204904), format the internal drive, reinstall the OS and put back your data. This will eliminate any software-related malfunction. If it still does it after, it could be hardware failure, but hard to say what hardware.
