First let me apologize for this thread as I know for a fact there must be a bunch like it, but I'm browsing from my iPhone and everytime I try to search I get the "Safari could not connect to the server" (paraphrase, but I'm sure you know the one) popup message. It's driving me nuts, and I hate to create a thread on a topic I know has been covered before, but I'm at work and don't have time to browse through pages and pages of forum threads. I'm assuming they're pretty far back as 3.1.2 has been out for awhile. So anyway, sorry for the repeat thread, and probably the length of this post. Here goes:
Right now I'm using a launch day 3GS with 3.0 FW, jailbroken with PurpleRa1n (and a PC with Windows XP). It's been great and I've never really felt the need to upgrade to 3.1.x FWs as MMS wasn't THAT big of a deal to make me have to re-setup all my JB settings. However now I'm running into the problem of a lot of the newer apps I want require 3.1.x FW. The Grand Theft Auto: Chinatown game, that speech-to-text app, and Conan O'Brien's "Walker Lever" (lollol) being examples. So I finally decided to just upgrade and re-JB. I'd like to use BlackRa1n, as PurpleRa1n was ridiculously easy and quick so Im basically looking for a tutorial (or link to an existing thread) that gives me step-by-step info and answers the following questions:
1 - Do I just upgrade to 3.1.2 via iTunes when it asks me to (everytime I connect my phone to my PC lol), or do I need to get a custom 3.1.2 FW and upgrade to that (I believe using the shift + something else method to select that file in iTunes correct?)? If so, where can I find that custom FW file?
2 - Are all versions of iTunes compatible with 3.1.2 JB? I remember reading something here awhile ago about NOT upgrading to the newest iTunes if you had a JB phone, is that still the case? I'm running an older iTunes now, but I'm not sure which version, I just looked up a version of iTunes released around the same time as the 3GS and got that, because that is the version that installed on my other computer when I first setup my new phone.
3 - Once I'm upgraded to 3.1.2 is BlackRa1n just like PurpleRa1n, just DL the file, plug in your phone, and double click BlackRa1n to "make it rain"?
4 - I'm running Categories right now, do I need to remove all apps from that before upgrading to 3.1.2?
5 - does all the good stuff work with 3.1.2? Roatation Lock, the other SBSettings, Categories, Stack, Winterboard, etc?
6 - Any other important info/tips I should know?

It's a place you feel like you can ask for help (or create a thread about a topic that's been covered already, lol, sorry) and actually recieve legit, helpful answers instead if being bashed or talked down to etc like a lot of other iPhone-modding forums, or just forums in general.
