I've placed an order for the new 13" base model Macbook Air with the upgraded 4gb Ram. Now I'm thinking if the 13" pro would have been a better option considering it has more possibilities for upgrading in the future in terms of ram, SSD HD etc and also benefiting from having a back lit keyboard, dvd drive and ethernet port. Do you guys think it would of been a better option and more future proof?

It depends on your needs. What programs do you run? Anything that needs more than 4GB?

Pro will always be a better "value proposition" if you don't mind the form factor. Air is about size. That said, I've been very happy using MacBook Airs (or is it MacBooks Air?) as my sole Macs since February 2008, and am looking forward to my Ultimate 13".

Note that there have been some announcements from third parties already about SSDs for the Air (see the front page for a 256GB option, albeit without a price or ETA yet). That's the only expandable part since the RAM is soldered on.

You are also getting a much better display with the MacBook Air than the MacBook Pro 13" model

13" MacBook Air = 1440x900 pixel resolution

13" MacBook Pro = 1280x800 pixel resolution

Agree with KPOM. You should first consider your needs. Do you really need to upgrade your mac? Imo, with 4 GB ram it will enough to use for 2 years at least. After 2 years I'm sure Apple will make more awesome one and you (also us :)) will buy instead uf upgrading our old ones :)

The screen on the 13" MBP is rather limiting - saw an old MBA on clearance at BB today with the 1280x800 resolution, that looks so limiting now. You won't be upgrading the screen on the 13" MBP very easily.

Moving down from a 15" MBP - the 13" MBA is the perfect form factor.

Ultimately depends on your needs but IMO - if i was going with the 13" i'd definitely be going for the MacBook Pro..

Just bought two 13" MBA's. One for me and one for the wife.

I am coming from a 15" MBP with 1440x900 resolution. To be perfectly honest I am not noticing any difference at all with the smaller screen. This is to be completely expected since you have the same amount of screen real-estate (but the ppi is smaller on the 13"). The increased sharpness of the MBA is a very cool thing IMO.

Thanks for your replies guys. Well all I need my macbook for is surfing, use for university work such as word processing and watching vidz online. This will be my first mac, so wouldn't mind having a little mess around with imovie. The one thing that did put me off the 13" pro was the screen res, canceled my order and opted for 13" 1.86ghz Air with the 4 gb of ram! I won't be taking my macbook to uni with me but do like the idea of having it in my lap when lounging around at home. Think I will be more than happy if it lasts me at least 2 years. I have also taken out apple care so it should keep me covered if anything does go wrong.

Should receive it Monday, can't wait now :)
