when i put them in the speaker slot nothing happens. Obviously if the speakers can have sound when in headphones slot then its maybe something needing adjusted on the imac???

Have iMac & have JBL speakers which only work in headphones slot

you have audio in and audio out. if you plug speakers into the audio out, sound will come from there rather then through the iMac's speakers.
If you plugged headphones in, would you want sound coming out of the iMac's speakers to?
The slot next to the headphone slot is microphone input. Right in your user manual or easily looked up.
