Have iTunes Auto New Files to Library?

I have a HP MediaSmart Server that hosts all of my content. I'll rip CDs/DVDs on a Mac Pro or MacBook Pro and then transfer to the appropriate folder on the HP. I have my MacBook Pro iTunes library point to the HP. I hook it up to the TV to watch movies, TV shows, etc. I add new content often.

Is there a way to get iTunes to periodically check the folder(s) for new content so I don't have to try to remember what is new and manually add to library?

Not that I know of. iTunes is designed to manage your files for you, you need only care about accessing the content using iTunes interface.

Out of curiosity, why do you feel the need to manage the files & folders yourself? I see this a lot (esp with iPhoto) and never understood why people feel the need to manage their files & folders by themselves when they have a tool right there that does it for them.

Maybe I'm too disorganized to understand, but I can't wrap my head around it. I'd much rather let the software worry about storing and finding files itself and just spend my time picking what to watch/ hear / sync from iTunes.

Is there some major advantage I'm missing?
