Have to reset AirPods to work with my devices?

I have my AirPods paired with my iPhone (I think), my MacBook Pro, and my iPad. My MacBook Pro and iPad show they are paired, however, when it comes time to use them and stream audio to them they do not always work. I end up having to put them back in the case and repair/reset them by holding the button on the case down. Is there something I am missing? How many devices can they work with?
