Have you found InDesign CS3 takes a long time to start up?

I normally use InDesign CS but am thinking of upgrading to CS3 and downloaded the 30 day trial.

I find it slightly sluggish; also CS takes about 15 seconds to start up and CS3 takes about 50 seconds. The trial version does have some bumph that comes up before the programme but I'm thinking it's probably because the CS3 version is nearly four times the size of the older version. I'm using a 1.67 G4 Powerbook with 512 MB of RAM and looking to upgrade it at the end of the year. Do those of you with newer MBPs find it runs well?

I didn't think of this beforehand, but I'm being careful to use only the original CS to work on existing documents as I'm assuming the new one will save them in a format I can't open once the trial is over.

i don't think you'll be seeing those 15 second startup times with ID CS3 on a G4, but 25-30 would be closer to a reasonable time (the program has gained a lot of functionality over two releases). I think your machine may be starved for RAM. 1GB is about adequate to get reasonable response times, more is a good thing if you want to juggle a few CS3 apps.

IMO it's not sluggish at all on Macintel, given sufficient RAM.

Good plan on not relying on file interchange between versions, it's limited and a pain in the butt (and CS<->CS3 is a double pain).

Thanks for that. Didn't think the PB was able to run it to its best so thought I'd ask those who have upgraded for their opinions. I don't think it's worth adding any more RAM to the PB, I'll just wait until I've upgraded before buying CS3 apps. Not too long now.

I currently use InDesign and Photoshop so the advice about the RAM needed for running several CS3 apps together is much appreciated. I'm trying the apps one at a time to decide whether to upgrade just InDesign and leave Photoshop for now, or get the Creative Suite.

I've been using CS3 for a while and I think it starts faster.

Photoshop CS3 starts faster by a second or two (10 vs 11) over CS2
Indesign CS3 starts waay faster (about 10) over CS2 but it's still slow (12 vs 20ish). Sometimes they take half a minuite to start

I use a 2.1Ghz iMac 1.5GB RAM.

has done some benchmarks using a mac pro, so shave a few secs for a powermac without the rosetta emulation

On both my iMac (2GB RAM) and my Power Mac (6 GB RAM), ID CS3 starts up in less than 10 seconds. If you are going to be using ID and, especially PS a lot, upgrading your hardware would probably be the first thing to do. I'd say the minimum RAM for any machine running CS3 should be 2GB.
