It manifests itself as vibrations on the iPhone e.g.

MBAir and iPhone, both using the same iCloud account with all syncs active.

on the MBAir, disable "Back to my Mac", leave it a bit.

Then, reenable it on the MBAir, and while it's activating the iPhone will emit two short vibrations. It's not a fluke, it it's 100% repeatable.
