I, like many, updated my iPhone to 3.1 when it became available. The upgrade went smooth to start and I was enjoying the new features. Until yesterday everything was going great anyway. I went to go watch TV for a few came back to my phone and it was pretty warm to the touch as if I had just finished playing a game. Odd though since I haven't used it for over an hour.

So, I restarted the phone, hard reset the second time. No differences. This afternoon I restored (using a backup since I didn't want to destroy all my information if I didn't have to). No change.

One thing I noticed though was that my Usage panel had the same time for both Usage and Standby. Which is odd as usually I get 15-20 hours of Standby per charge and about 6 hours or so of actual Usage. Locked the phone. Let it sit for a few minutes, came back and both times had increased the same amount. So clearly something is happening in the background even when the phone is locked. (I should note I am not jailbroken and no hacks are applied, this is a bone stock 3GS with Apps installed)

First thing I did was shut off Wifi, no change. Then Location Services, no change. Then 3G, no change. Turned off Push for email, no change. Turned off Notifications, no change. Turned airplane mode on. Woot, we have liftoff. Standby went up, Usage stayed the same just as it should be when the phone is locked with no apps running.

So I turned everything back on as it was before hand. Then went into email and made each of my email accounts inactive, one at a time. Turns out my Exchange account was causing the problem. When I made that one inactive it leveled out exactly how it should have.

Anyone else who is having severe battery issues able to confirm/deny whether they have an Exchange account setup and whether making it inactive solves your problem? Or any other emails for that matter.

I suggest trying to narrow it down the same way I did if you have the time to test it out. Post results below please.

No offense intended as you bring up a decent issue to check - but there are a few battery threads right here on the front page. Did we need a new one?

That was sort of the problem. I considered posting to one, or all of them. But that just didn't seem real effective.

This might also just be a problem that I myself have and no one else has. If that's the case, it can quickly and easily float to the bottom and die without killing the other threads, or taking them over.

I had this same problem and for whatever reason resetting the network settings seemed to fix the issue for me.

Some people have also said resetting your iPhone and restoring it as a new phone helps 3.1 run smoothly as the baggage left behind from 3.0 hinders 3.1 more than it helps it.

If this is the case and what we should be doing for software upgrades then Apple needs to get off their ass and provide a way to backup application data when we start our phones off as new.

Honestly it's pretty sad that on Version 3 (I guess version 2 of user developed applications) of iPhone OS and iTunes 9 we still don't have an official "sync" for developers and instead they have to write their own "wifi" syncing or sync to web services for backup purposes.

I'm also having a battery drain issue. My phone lost 30% battery life without me even touching it (3 hour period).

Never had any issues with 3.0.

Is it possible to restore and set-up as a new phone without losing app settings?

LMAO I dont understand how we can all just accept the fact that we should restore the phone as new and continue on with our life?

Like how normal is this everytime some update comes out to just restore the phone and spend a day organizing stuff and setting stuff up?

Like this is ridiculous, apple needs to get programmers that know what their doing and do their end of the job, while we already have and purchased $500+ devices..

I refuse to set-up my phone as new for the 3rd time since i got in (Aug 1st).

I love an opportunity to 'setup as new iphone.' I have everything organized enough that it only requires 10 minutes of hands-on and two hours overnight while I sleep for 32GB.

I just got in the habit from beta installs. My 3GS is lightning fast and gets great battery life.

My phone gets slightly worse battery life in 3.1 and I have an exchange account for my school email. Never had the phone stay hot while locked, actually never been hot, just warm.

Same for me. I went to bed a couple of nights ago with 100% battery and when I woke up, it was at 30%. I noticed that it seemed to keep searching for the network, which I know can cause battery drain. I also would get several text messages together, indicating that it had found the network. This is very unusual, because I have great service at home and never see it searching. I reset the network settings and it's back to normal.

I just upgraded my 2G to 3GS this week and I'm just curious, what kind of battery life were folks getting before 3.1? My 3GS had 3.0 on it but as soon as I got home I updated to 3.1 so I have no idea if mine improved or not. I haven't had the chance to really put it through a battery cycle though, either. Maybe in the next few days. I did go on a day trip to the bay area the other day and had 75% battery when I got back. That's a lot of cell tower switching and whatnot - wifi on, no bluetooth, 3G.

I also don't have a problem doing a restore, I've been doing it since 1.x updates. Doesn't seem like a big deal, especially if things seem to work better. I don't think anyone has perfected simple upgrades of software, always seems like something left over screws up.

Don't you lose your texts, recent calls, data volume and call time when you do this?

Actually OP, there are a few battery threads, sure...
But you bring up more of an app/process issue that severely affecting your phone's performance battery-wise.

The best part of it is you gave a detailed resolution to your own problem and I think it will help a lot of other people diagnose, or at least try to, their own issues.

Good job.

this is actually a different from other battery threads..thread.

This tells you how to fix a problem that a simple restart won't fix. You have now narrowed it down to the actual issue.
