Having chrome and safari open with 3 tabs each is almost 1g?

no matter how many tabs you have on it? That can't happen.
In any case with three tabs it's close to 400mb and so is chrome, safari a bit better with less tabs, but worse in returning memory after you close some of them.
In any case 500mb max is something that just isn't the case, never.
Chrome multiplies as you add the tabs - it keeps launching more processes, there is a cost to having its process isolation model.
But aside from an occasional use machine, no one should bother with the 2GB models, and really Apple ought to ensure that no machine in this day and age ships with just 2GB. I guess they have to hit those magical price points though.

Just picked up 2GB 13" MBA...
Wanted to test out memory allocation so I ran a very unscientific test..I opened chorme with 7 windows all pointed to YouTube and played videos in every tab.
I then opened Safari and ran multiple YouTube tabs as well.
Then I opened every program in the bottom tray at the same time.
Activity monitor still showed RAM available and every program responded quickly when I tried to use it.
Frankly I was amazed by the performance and it blew away my 2010 MBP 13". It would have choked on this test.
I do feel its cheap and petty for Apple to only give 2GB..but it is more than sufficient for my usage.

To a certain extent I agree with you...but when you purchase an Air you are making certain concessions to size, weight, and aesthetics.
For most people (normal everyday stuff, web, email, itunes) the Air works fine.
If you need 8GB RAM you are a power user and the Air isn't an option for you with todays configurations.
I am a very light user and so far (emphasize so far!) the Air has exceeded my expectations even with "only" 2GB of ram. I may come to regret the decision but I took a long hard look at what I actually do with my computer and the Air filled my needs perfectly.
