Ok, after owning my MBP for about a month and a half, it's starting to piss me off. I'm having only 2 problems, but their big problems for me.

1)Closed Lid Operation. I bought the dvi-svideo adapter from apple. This works pretty good, but when in closed lid mode, with a usb keyboard plugged in, the machine goes to sleep on it's own in 10 or less seconds, then wakes back up, then goes back to sleep, ...

2)Windows support. One of the main selling points is that it runs XP as well as a PC machine would. This a big lie. When using XP, the dvi-svideo doesn't even work. I get a very distorted picture on the tv that the maching is connect
to, and this is really a problem for me. I've sold 3 PC users on getting Macs on the fact that it runs XP as any other PC machine is. Tuns out I'm a liar, and will tell these people not to switch.

Ok, this is the end of my rant.

1. Check your energy settings, you may need to change a few things in there to enable the closed-lid mode.

2. Windows support was never advertised as being complete. Boot Camp is clearly marked "Beta" and should be treated that way. Once 10.5 comes out and Boot Camp is complete you should see a full set of drivers.

Give it time, i'm sure all the relevant drivers will have been written for Macs to run Windows as good as, or better than a PC. Patience, they are still ironing these things out.

You might regret your purchase now, but if you don't give it some time, you will regret getting rid of it.

Rich.

1. Try plugging in some speakers too.

2. That's not a problem with the computer. Sounds like there is some kind of underscan problem. SVideo can behave really badly at times. It try some different resolutions, possibly different colour levels. I remember the graphics card in my Dell PC had an SVideo output and I could never get that to work properly with my TV at the resolutions I wanted.

I think you should tell your friends that s-video out doesn't in Windows on the mbp, but otherwise it's fine. Then they can make their own decision.

Svideo is supported in XP, but I think the drivers haven't been written yet for BootCamp. I'll just tell them they might want to wait for a offical release of dual booting.

Well, being able to do a presentation is a biggie for me. My MBP gets a little hot, but that doesn't bother me too much since most high end notebooks get hot under heave useage.

Luxury problems in my opinion.

1. Problem is known as far as I am concerned, with several fixes.
2. Your statement about lying to your customers is clearly also a lie. Bootcamp is a beta, Windows works, just not your s-video, big deal.

Would you like some bread to your whine?

Quite frankly, considering the heated post made by the OP, he really should thank his lucky stars. In view of all these "Oh noes, I got a lemon MBP" threads I see around here, I really can see myself being very worried when I order mine later this year.

All I know is as far as I'm concerned, if I get a unit that doesn't whine, doesn't overheat, no dead pixels, and powers up, I'm all golden.

You should rais your expectations. I paid for a working MBP, and that's what I expected. If you get a true lemon, send it back. All in all, I personally know 8 people with either a MB or MBP, and they don't have any of the "moo/whine" problems. We all have the "it gets hot" problem, but we push or machines very hard. The type of problems we do have may seem trivial to you or some others, but not to us. It's not a luxury to want your machine to work the way it should, reguardless of the problems others are having.

You're not a liar, but YOU did screw up doubly, and you should take responsibility for that. If you tell your friends anything, that's what you should tell them. They'll respect you a lot more than if you immaturely try to shift the responsibility for your mistakes to Apple. If they're smart, or if they took the time to read the Boot Camp website, they'll see right through that.

1. The Boot Camp website clearly mentions there's missing support for a lot of hardware functions, not that it runs XP as well as a PC would. If S-Video was that important to you, you should've asked about it on one of these forums.

2. You ran your mouth about something you not only had no experience with, but apparently also didn't even bother to research. Don't expect to have much credibility with others if you do this. If you aren't already, you'll become known as a BSer.

You screwed up. Be man or woman enough to admit it.

Have you ever tried getting a machine replaced? I once had the luxury of trying when I got the irritating PBG4 with a screen full of lines. It is subtle, but somehow I just got this nagging sensation that something is wrong with it. Come onto MR forums and found a post about it, bam, a sinking feeling inside.

Anyhow I spent 30 minutes talking with a level 1 tech, probably someone in India (back then when Apple still has call centres in India!) being walked through the steps on how to calibrate my display (something I already tried 5-6 times myself before calling!), got transferred to a "Product specialist", got transferred to a "Customer's relations" officer, and final verdict 2.5 hours later? Essentially a very polite "suck it up". I didn't even have the option of taking the 10% restocking fee penalty and sending it back.

Next thing I know, that thing was on eBay and gone 10 days later. Only lost $200 in the whole episode, pretty good first experience with Apple. Good thing the 2nd Mac, a Mini, works way better. Certainly expect better from them for the Mac Pros and also the next rev MBPs though.

Edit: the funny thing is back then I was the cynical and sceptical one, constantly going around insisting that Apple really stuffed this one up. Meanwhile there are the usual suspects from our group of... groupies (sick of the other word)... who insists "Stop being so cynical! Apple is flawless! They will fix it!". I just gave up reading those threads, came back when the MBP was released 3 months later, revisited one of those old threads, and guess what? Issue not fixed. Not even acknowledged. Incidentally Cnet does have a nice article about those lines.

Certainly taught me a lot about what to expect from Apple generally, if you keep high expectations you are always gonna end up being pissed off. Contrary if you pay the Apple premium, accept to yourself deep inside "Yes, I am a sucker", and whatever comes just suck it up like you would with any Dell, you'd probably be happier, second guess yourself a lot less, and maybe even live longer.

1) Apple's own commercial says they do Windows. And if you read the Boot Camp page. They say nothing about what works or what doesn't. Besides the iSight. http://www.apple.com/macosx/bootcamp/
2) The svideo problem is my problem, not the people who I said "yeah it runs windows."

S-video works fine on my machine when running XP, it could be the TV, or whatever display you are using, my dell monitor at 24'' is a little brighter under S-video but nothing all that life destroying.

Well come to find out, that s-video out to a TV isn't supported. The ati options don't have a tab for TV. I've sent apple a email to see if they plan on supporting it in another bootcamp revision or the next offical release of OSX.

With my #1 problem fixed, I'm back to being around 99.9% pleased with my MBP. It's good to know that my #2 problem is a problem because it's not supported yet, and not that it just doesn't work.
