Personally with the same CPU and GPU I have some load issues with 1080p 50-60 fps videos on YT.
I have already disabled hardware acceleration on Chrome but without success.
On VLC player 1080p .mkv videos run good.
I am considering to upgrade GPU.
I have contacted several suppliers and they have told me that my model (iMac 10,1) can support a nVidia Quadro k1100m 2 GB GDDR5.

These are not demanding HD videos, some are just soundtracks, so just audio. I'm using Safari.
Maybe an update has messed this up?
Was working fine a couple of days ago.

Actually I haven't done that update. Just checked and it is available, maybe it will help?
After the update my iMac has become noticeably slower, however after several restarts everything is fine.
I don't know if it will help because it's only a security update, however you can try.
You can also try to reset the PRAM.

Thanks for letting me know.
I guess it is a Safari issue, the videos I was having trouble with open no problem with Firefox.

I find Safari and Chrome quite buggy with streaming sometimes, random flashing when watching with subtitles etc. Firefox always OK.
