Just curious to what everyone else is using for this movie.

My copy came out great. But I want to see what you all are doing too. Let me know if you could. Thanks.

Here's what I used. Tell me if I am doing it right or wrong.

H.264
2 Pass Encoding
Turbo first Pass
Constant Quality 70%
Deinter Lace: Slow
File: 2.20 gigs.

Out Come, almost exact dvd quality. No frame hiccups or anything.

I use crf @ 72% for my movies and they seem to turn out beautiful.

as far as deinterlace goes, i dont think 23.97 shows are interlaced, just the 29.97 ones, like tv shows. When i do rip tv shows, i use slower deinterlace as it is supposed to do the nicest job.

the crf hasa couple advantages, its only 1 pass, and uses the necessary bitrate to give you the desired picture quaility, so its much faster than 2 pass. The disadvantage of crf is that it can lead to crazy file sizes when doing certain types of rips, i found that ripping tv shows, you need to turn it down, some of my tv shows are at 55% and looks very close to the original quality.

My advice , read the handbrake wiki and learn what the presets do, and then play with it and see how it turns out for you. for th emost part, the atv presets are spot on.

I used
AVI Wrapper
2 Pass
2500 kbps Mpeg4
Anamorphic ON
Dolby Digital AC3 Passthrough
And De-interlace (fast)

And it looks Great (about 1.8 Gig i think)
I use the AVI Setting because I Stick Everything i Rip Onto a 1TB HD and plug it into my X-Box 360 to watch on my TV and it dose not like H264 with anything but Sterteo or Pro logic 2 and I have it hooke up to a 5.1 reciever.

TV show animation on DVD like Family Guy I rip using Ipod HQ Settings but change the bit rate to 1000Kbps so i Can whang them onto my ipod if i want, and some films, i.e. the matrix i use the top settings but change it from bitrate based encoding to Filesize and set it to 3.8 GB (as big as im willing to go as the Ext drive is FAT32)

I encode cartoons at 400-500kbps. They look good enough on my 20" monitor and faultless on the iPod. But for films I always encode at 1500kbps. Always double pass.

Perhaps you guys dont realize what deinterlacing does, fast deinterlacing should be a definate no no unless absolutely necessary ....

"HandBrake's traditional deinterlacer, "Fast" essentially uses something called line doubling. First, it discards half the fields. This creates a half-height image. Then, to return to the full vertical resolution, it doubles the remaining fields. The result looks just plain nasty..."

FOr those of you too lazy to do the research look here ....

http://trac.handbrake.fr/wiki/DeinterlacingGuide

I hope that will save people from making poor encodes .....

If your gonna go through all the trouble to rip these movies and encode them, you may want to consider how you will use them in the future, say on a 50 inch tv of some kind ... otherwise you will be doing it all again. :)
