Would love to have access to HBO Go through my Apple TV, or at the very least, the ability to stream audio AND video with Airplay. Surely one of the two is bound to happen, right?

There may be a way to do it via jailbreaking (without running afoul of copyright issues) - I know that Xfinity (Comcast) now has an ios app that allows you to stream your cable to your ios devices. I'm wondering if with jailbreaking your handheld, and enabling Airvideoenabler (cydia app) you can stream this to your iPhone? Haven't tried this yet (I don't have cable).

Apple is always secretive about it's upcoming features. Just look at the iTunes TV streaming purchases and Vimeo player that came out of nowhere this week. I wouldn't be surprised if Apple TV get the HBO Go player as well at some point.
