I'm looking to get an external HD - 160-250GB.
Firewire is NOT necessary, but it IS important that the drive can be powered by ONE USB port (the same as it transfers data through.

No AC adaptor, no transfering via firewire and charging via USB, and no dobble USB stick that will take up both my USB hubs.

So far the LAcie porche mobile drive and the WDpassports looks like a good choice. But the box says that SOME laptops will have to use a dobble USB cable cause there won't be enough power in the USB hubs.

Can anyone confirm that there is enough power in the hubs of an 15" MBP (C2D) to power the drive?

Thanks

Yeah, my brother has a WD Passport with his Macbook Pro 15" and there is plenty of power to run it from only one USB port without a power adapter. Not sure about the other one, but I would be really, really surprised if the MBP couldn't handle it.

I have the WD 120GB passport drive and it works great with my 15" MBPro. No extra power needed. I have a 500GB external LaCie and it takes awhile to mount whenever I plug it in. But the one I have is not a portable drive.

I use a LaCie mobile on just one USB port, but I also have (and recommend) the LaCie rugged w/FW800. I have the 160GB version of that one and it's great.

I'm using the Passport 120GB on my MacBook for music and movies and it works great. Only 1 USB, bus powered, and streams movies with no stuttering. Performed better than I thought it would be.

Plus it's really tiny and can fit in your bag easily. It will definitely work for you.

I have a LaCie 500GB USB 2 external drive, and it works perfectly. It can take a minute to mount though, I'm guessing it has something to do with it being formatted as FAT. I got mine on-sale for $120 Canadian, so it was a fantastic deal. Even without getting one on-sale, I'd still highly recommend it.

i am in the same boat. my new place is going to be desk-less. my 12" pb was stolen and i replaced it with a 15" mbp 2.2/2g ram/120gb hd. LOVE this machine. I miss the size of the 12: though, for me it was perfect.

anyway, i too am looking for a small *PORTABLE* hd. maybe 80-250 gb, uses a single usb or fw port.....some of the ones mentioned above...anyone have links? I'd like to check them out.

thanks!! :apple:

Even matches the colour schemes with your laptop, black, white or silver :D
