Hi, i just got my 1st ever Mac (Alu iMac) i choose a 320 GB Hardrive (from the Apple site)

Ive just checked the size of the drive, and it says

Capacity: 297 GB
Available: 280 GB

Is this correct? i thought i would have atleast 300GB available.

That does seem odd. I know Leopard accounts for approx 11GBs, not sure where the other 39GB went to. Did you get any pro apps preinstalled such as Logic Pro 8, Aperture, Final Cut Pro? Those take up a lot of space, especially Logic and FCP. That could explain it.

Nope, i never had anything pre-installed :(

Thanks for the help.

It's the difference between decimal (SI) and binary measurements. The drive is marketed using SI measurements (kilo = 1000) yet the computer can only recognise the binary measurements kilo = 1024). In short, it's normal and you don't have anything to worry about. :)
