they exist, just not being made anymore.

DVD player might be able to play them, but you'd need a separate drive for it since no Macs come with a Blu-Ray or HD Dvd drive (player or burner)

The DVD Player app can play MPEG-2 HD DVDs using the "classic" format (I've forgotten the proper name for it). Most commercial DVDs use the newer format with VC-1 video so DVD Player can't play them. In addition, the drive included with your system cannot read HD media.

It is possible to play HD DVDs using PowerDVD under Boot Camp, however you will need a drive too. I use an Xbox 360 drive, which now cost NZ$49 new so that's a cheap option if you happen to already own PowerDVD.

It's also worth mentioning that Apple committed to supporting both formats all the way back in 2005. While it's not looking promising, there's still a chance that support will eventually be added to DVD Player. Leopard 10.5.2 actually detects the disc format and launches DVD Player, but gives up there, whereas previous versions of Leopard would mount the disc but not attempt to play it. Tiger wouldn't even mount the disc at all.

Warner is still making them, until the end of May. I find it rather ironic that the company credited with causing the downfall of the format is now the only one still making movies for it.

my mistake then, i thought they were stopping sooner

If you want to watch Bluray on mac,

buy toast titanium and it will install a bluray extension so that you can watch them.

I watch bluray movies all the time on my iMac.
