With the new 2.3 update the feature for the HD tag beside any personal HD movies is now available.

I used to name them all [HD] movie name

but now with the new update, I think I will drop the [HD]. The only downside to this is iTunes doesn't see them as HD at the moment, hopefully this is something that will be updated.

My question for all of you is, have you started to rename any of your HD movies with this added tag?

My few HD encodes are all properly recognized as HD by AppleTV. I hope Apple adds a HD logo for movies in an iTunes library in the next update.

I think :apple:TV just adds this icon next to HD videos automatically based on something it detects in the file. There doesn't seem to be anything we have to tag in the file. Is there? Perhaps I'm missing something.

Michael

No it does it automatically for you, but just with the 2.3 update. But it doesn't keep them sorted in iTunes. For example if I want to sync a movie to my iPod touch, I'm not going to know what is HD or SD.

Yeah, this is the same thing I'm coming across. I'm still trying to figure out how to get HD and SD files to live just like the iTunes purchases in the library.

Michael

Problem with this is that if your export a HD home movie from iMovie to AppleTV it does it as 940x560 and this doesn't show with the HD tag on :apple:TV.

Instead I'm having to re-encode my home movies I already have and export them as a 1280x720 MP4 file at 5000kbps to get the HD tag.

Poor show Apple. Yes its a little thing, but its annoying because when the misses was scrolling through the movies she said "I thought our new camera was HD?", which is was just not with Apples HD export. Poor form there!

This is surprising to me as well... I figured they would have considered 540p high definition, since the device cannot playback a 1080i file.

Exactly!! Why bother having HD cameras to dump to an AppleTV if it doesn't show your files as HD. Yes I know 540p is still very good quality, but still if joe public who doesn't know much about it wonders why a HD camera movie doesn't have HD next to it, Apple are doing something wrong.

Glad I caught this now while I still have all my footage in iMovie so its just the time to export again rather than re-capture.

Spitting it out at 720p at 6000kbps seems to work fine too.

I have a video at 1016 x 548 @ 1500KBPS that has the HD Tag showing up for me.
