HD needs repair - help!

I had my PM G5 Quad crash a couple of times lately: 'OSX quit unexpectedly error on startup afterwards' - so I went to disc utility to try to verify the disc / repair permissions, etc...

I got the following message back - but the icon for 'repair disc' did not light up - so am I stuck? Is it off to the Apple store for me or is there anything else I can do on my end? Thx -

I think that means a dead HD.

Well if that's the drive that your boot partition is on then you can't repair while you're using it.

You'll need to boot onto disk utility on the os x cd and repair the volume from there. Give that a shot first.

You need to boot off another volume to repair your startup drive. You can use your restore disk or OS-X install disk. Once you get to the "install" dialog, you should see menus on the menu bar - you can select "Disk Utility" from there.

Not necessarily, but you do need to boot from your original installation CD and run Disk Utility from it. You can't repair directory damage from your own boot disk. You may find that DU can't fix those errors, Disk Warrior is one of the best.

Hey thanks for the quick replies!

I have a second hard drive I've been using for backup. If I boot up to this drive, then I should be able to repair my original one, yes???

Same thing was happening to my wife's iMac 17" G5. I could back-up all her stuff (although it went wery slow!) and just changed the HDD for a new one.

Getting a new drive is a small price to pay and you get some peace of mind.
