well its a 20gb ibm hd that i put in a case just to reformat and wellwhen i go into disk utility try to format and always says theres an error i dont know what else i can say and its usb
 
Open up disc utility and select the partition tab for the drive. Select options and chose Apple Partition Scheme. Hit Partition and boom, you are in business.

Are you sure the drive is still good? Those older IBM drives had a lot of problems.
 
Did you read my solution above? I'd throw down 5 bucks that will fix your problem. The WD Mybooks have the same procedure for formating. Again, click on the drive and then click on the partition tab. Go to options and select Apple Partition Scheme (or Map), set the # of partitions that you want (probably 1) and then click on "Partition", it should give you the format that you want.
