Hd Space Lost ???

I have a macbook and external HD. I keep all major files multimedia, etc on the external. I have litterally 8gb of files on this computer. Yesterday i had 30gb free, THis morning. 568MB!!!! where did it all go. I have 100 gb hd, and 8 gb of files and everything is gone. And i never have any idea where it goes. This really pisses me off. I deleted a bunch of files have 19 gb now and i'm getting errors that my startup disk is full
