In trying to figure out what the next revision of MBPs might get in terms of GPU, I'm trying to figure out why Apple put HD4670s in the 21" iMacs.

The 4670 is last years tech and the newer 4830 has about the same TDP with far better performance. HP's 15" Envy sports the 4830 so it would clearly fit inside of the new iMacs (and MBPs).

I just don't understand why Apple would opt for such a slow GPU, especially when powering at 21" screen, when there's literally no reason for them not to have used the far superior 4830 :S

mobile 4850 is close to desktop's 4830 in perf, so they already got it :p

The Mobility HD 4830 is a derivation of the 40nm 4770 desktop component. In some cases it can outperform the desktop HD 4850.

Even with the fewer shaders the only limits you're going to see on the Mobility HD 4830 will be placed at higher resolutions.

Apple probably didn't want the products to compete with the small margin and wanted people to cough up for the ancient RV770.

Yep, it really is a great card and seems perfectly suited for the iMac and MBP.

I can only assume it's because it costs a few $ more than the prehistoric 4670.

Really disappointing show from Apple.
