HDD fan spinning at 5500rpm!!

what's going on?!
I just got my HDD replaced, because I got a crappy loud Seagate before, and now it sounds like a freaking airplane!

What's going on?! And is there a fix for this?

EDIT: I shut down the computer for a few minutes and started it up again. Not as loud, but the fan is now spinning at 2800rpm.

This can't be normal.. and it definitely wasn't like this before.
 
How do you monitor the RPM of the HDD platters? Or do you mean the fan speed? Have you any fan control software installed? What temperature does the HDD have?

And what specific HDD do you have?

I'm sorry, that was my mistake. I meant to say the HDD fan.
I have istat pro installed and that told me the speed of it.
It's spinning at 2800rpm+ right now.
the HDD temp is 110 F

I just finished installing my OS back from TM, so that might be why it's so hot, it's been writing for about an hour now, of not more.
 
That's 43°C, that's more than normal, my HDD currently has 52°C (125.6 F) with normal load (1.5MB/s). Do you have iStat Menus 3 or any other kind of fan control software installed? Because my HDD fan spins at 1293 RPM.
But I have a 2007 Aluminium iMac, so that might not be a proper comparison.

No, I don't have any fan controllers installed. Just this one that tells me how fast it's going. I'm on the phone with AppleCare right now, and the guy isn't telling me much.

I already restarted it 3 times, and the fan basically stars at 2k and keeps getting faster and faster, but the HDD temp stays the same.

I have no idea what do to.

Maybe you can circumvent that by using SMC Fan Control, as you can manually set the fan speeds of each fan.

I don't think I should be controlling them. Just because there might be something that needs to be cooled down, and I don't wanna screw up the whole system by slowing down the fans.

the culprit here is the temp sensor most likey.

who did the replacement? you did it yourself? or the apple store?

if seagate what did they replace it with? the seagate and WD ones are not one for one replacements from what I hear cause the sensor connectors are different.

Nope, I didn't do it. I called Apple and they did a on sight replacement.
They replaced the Seagate with a Hitachi.
Anyway, so I called AppleCare and the guy there told me that I'd have to take it to the Apple Store to get it checked up. Thankfully I remember the repair guys name/workplace. I called them and they gave me his cell number. He said he'd swing by on Monday and check it out. He said that most likely something's wrong with the chord, or it's not connected well, so therefor the iMac is basically protecting itself against overheating by blowing the fans max speed.

Either way, I just gotta deal with a jet-sounding computer until monday and then he'll come and (hopefully) fix it.

Sounds like the dummy didn't reconnect the temp sensor to the new hard drive. That's what causes the fan to speed up like that.

He was a really nice guy. He talked A LOT though, so I'm not surprised he left that out.

Anyway, I installed SMC Fan Control and it won't let me control any of the fans.. Am I doing something wrong?
I opened the preferences panel and set the RPM to 1300. And it's still at 4500 and keeps going up

well, lets put it this way, the only thing that was changed was the hard drive swap, so either way something went wrong with that swap otherwise you wouldn't be sitting here in this forum.:rolleyes:

haha well that's very true. It just seems very weird how I can see the temp of the HDD, and yet the fans are going crazy.

lol at least my computer has never been this cool, so that's a good thing.

110F is hardly HOT! that's only 43C and the 2800rpm does seem a little fast for this temp, the max speed for the fan is around 5000.

Have you reset the SMC?

Actually, I should make a correction there. It starts at around 2800 and gets faster and faster. within 5 minutes it's at 5344. I'm guessing that's the max.

How do I reset it?
 
So.. the on sight repair man stopped by my house again, took apart my computer to check all the wires and said that everything's in its perfect place.

Called Apple and they're sending out a new Logic Board for him to install on my computer.

Even though the problem started after the HDD install.

Hopefully this will fix everything. I'm REALLY tired of my computer being louder than the speakers that are built into it.

I really dont understand here, so the original problem was the hard drive was noisy, yet you didn't have fan problems, the repair guy goes and replaces the drive from Seagate to Hitachi and the fans go wild (literally):p

Now he says the logicboard is bad, the only way how I see the board being bad is he screwed up something with the drive replacement.

I have an idea, why not put the original seagate drive back in and see if the fans ramp up again?:rolleyes:then again I'm not the repair guy.

Surprisingly, it worked. The fans are back to normal. Actually they used to always be under 1k, but now they're a bit over (1100rpm). but I'm not complaining.

Looks like the logic board was the problem. Still don't get how, but whatever.

If your iMac is the same as everyone else's iMac 27", your HD fan is ~1119rpm.
