So I have a drive that apparently seems to have lost everything on it and given that it's 5 TB (and I have two backups) I'm just a bit disturbed that this occurred. But, I've looked for HDD recovery apps and a lot of them in the first google search seem to be malware disguised as something that will help. So what do you prefer to use to recover lost files on your mac volumes?

ProSoft's "Data Rescue" is a good one.

But.. a question:
Since you HAVE backups, why go through the long LONG process of data recovery? Such things as file names and folder hierarchies can be lost in the process, and it could take YEARS to "get everything back".

Better options:
1. Just ERASE the drive with Disk Utility, then run the "first aid" (repair) function on it.
2. Do you get a good report?
3. If yes, REPEAT the first aid function at least five times. Do you get a good report EVERY time?

If yes, I would "kind of" trust the drive again -- but always keep it backed up.

It's possible that the drive has had a hardware failure, and software data recovery tools won't work on it.

But again -- IF YOU HAVE A GOOD BACKUP, going through the rigamarole of data recovery just isn't worth the trouble...
