HDD rumbling iMac a software issue

Hi guys and girls,

After running all my disk utillity's (thechtool, diskwarrior, disk genius etc) the famous HDD seagate rumble was still present.

After a clean install the rumble is almost gone! It is reduced from 100% noise till about 15% ( my subjective opinion ;-)

This makes me think. Is the rumbling a software issue? Do certain programs make the HD work so much harder that it is very audible all the time?
I am going to install all my programs, bit by bit and hope it stays this way.

Going back to the apple store..... I do not think it will change anything. I mean so many people got new HDD but still had this problem. I really do not think It is a hardware thing but more a software issue.

i think when i put bootcamp on it started... just my guess but it seemed to be after windows was put on mine

Do you have a Seagate drive?

I have had a number of Seagate HDDs and they are almost always LOUD. It mainly has to do with the hardware Seagate uses. On the other hand Western Digital's HDDs are practically silent. I have a seagate in my i7 iMac, it is alittle loud but as long as it is not throwing any CRC/Read errors, it is fine with me.

It is only audible when the room is completely silent.

The root cause of the HD grumbling is not a software, but a mechanical issue. Some orders of reading sector do not require as much jumping of the heads between tracks, hence perception of less noise. It will likely come back though, when new data is written and re-written. Also, defragmentation may help in some cases. But the only sure and permanent solution is to have a quieter HD installed (or a totally quiet one, such as a SSHD).
