Wanting to copy a hard drive onto a new clean hard drive. Have a hard drive with High Sierra & Windows 10 on bootcamp. Would it be possible to transfer it to a clean formatted hard drive using migration assistant. If not, could it be done with firewire 800 cables from one mac pro 5,1 to another mac pro 5,1?
Any help would be appreciated.
Thanks

Migration Assistant in the past did not handle Boot Camp partitions - no idea if that's still the case.

Check Carbon Copy Cloner at Bombich.com. Not sure if it handles boot camp partitions.

If that doesn't work, I'd open terminal and use dd.

man dd

Thanks Flint...tried it a little while ago & you're right, it still doesn't. Might try downloading windows migration assistant & see if that works for bootcamp. I don't know if firewire will copy the complete drive, if not will use a clone copy.
Again
Thanks

1) Put the new drive in the same cMP with the old drive(s).

2) Partiton them accordingly.

3) use Carbon Copy Cloner (free for limited time) to clone the MacOS partition.

4) use WinClone to clone the Windows Partition (you have to pay for it)

5) move the new drive(s) to the other cMP.

Thanks h9826790. I have a new drive with High Sierra on it, with all the updates. Plus I have a new clean hard drive. I would just like to copy the bootcamp to the high sierra drive, if that's possible. Maybe partition it to 2 partitions (2nd one for windows) with WinClone. Is that possible or will I have to use the clean hard drive. It's already partitioned for OSX or will I have to re-partition it with Carbon Copy? This will be for my wife's cMP ( 5,1 ). Seems to be having trouble with the drive itself, that it wants to reboot after shutdown. Also, it won't go to sleep anymore. I can put her hard drive in my 2 other cMP's & it does the same thing so thought I would try and copy bootcamp ( Windows 10 ) for her on another drive.

I used winclone several times. It works OK.
one thing though - shrinking a partition and cloning it with Winclone takes forever...
It is not like Carbon copy cloner fast as hell.

Yes it's slower than CCC but as far as I know there is no other option for making bootable backups of your Windows partitions. (I could be wrong) I use WinClone all the time for cloning my Win partition. You don't have to shrink the image if your target disk is the same size or larger. That saves a lot of time if you have been shrinking your volume without needing to.

may be simpler to just clean install windows, windows can be funy about moving it to a second computer that it was not originally installed on if there's any different hardware.

After checking the prices of both, that's what I did. I installed Windows 10 on a SSD. The good thing about the cMP is it will boot to the separate drive without having an OSX on it. My wife will only use Windows although I have tried to get her to use the mac for what it is intended. But if she's happy, I'm happy lol
