HDD Upgrade Question

I've just bought a 250GB WD Scorpio for my MacBook and I've got a question about upgrading.

I've also bought a USB2 external enclosure so can I put the new drive in the MacBook, put the old drive in the enclosure and boot from the old drive?

Can I then clone that drive over to the new one?

I have done a simpler process with the old iMac G5 and it is an extremely easy process.
