Hi,

Have my LG tv connected with a HDMI cable.

All of a sudden sound in system preference says: the selected device has no sound output.

It has worked fine for months. Have not updated MacOS or done any alterations.

When I go to sound effect, they can be played on the TV.

Audio MIDI setup test, plays sound on the TV.

Whats going on? How can I fix this?

Best regard

Jimmi

Not sure what that has to do with sound output via HDMI. But might be worth a shot.

I have a MacBook Pro 2019 btw.

Try these:
  1. https://softwaretested.com/mac/hdmi-not-working-on-mac-after-catalina-update/
  2. Boot into Safe Mode and see if the issue happens. Boot back to normal running mode and check again if the issue happens. Safe Mode will cause the system caches to be recreated.
  3. Restart to Diagnostics Mode and run the hardware diagnostics. If the diagnostics pass, try the following items steps.
  4. Boot into Recovery Mode, Open Disk Utility and create a new partition (Container). In Disk Utility, ViewShow All Devices, select the top physical device listed (not select the Container nor Volume), click on the Partition button, set size for maybe 50GB 60GB, name is not important so pick whatever name you want. I suggest a new Container rather then new Volume because it will be easier when it comes time to remove, the Volumes associated with the Container will be removed. Install Catalina to the new Container.
  5. Restart to the new partition, setup as a new computer (don't install any third party software) and see if the issue happens. If the issue does happen then it is a bug in 10.15.6 Supplemental update. If the issue does not happen then it is third party software causing the issue.
  6. When you are done, restart to your current install and delete the new partition in Disk Utility.

Thx for the tip.

Its clearly a software issue, since I can get sound sent to the tv in certain settings. So weird it happened out of the blue. Computers, what you gonna do. :)

Have you chatted with Apple Support about the issue? That is what I would do.
