iPad HDMI to Lightning not showing video

I bought the Apple HDMI to Lightning connector, thinking I could play videos from my 9.7" iPad Pro to my Sony TV. When I make the connection and play a video, I hear the audio, but the the screen is black. I have tried a variety of players, VLC, etc, but nothing is working. I would appreciate any guidance.

Are you also using an external power source (because of the lightning connector) when the iPad is connected to the TV?

Yes, I have power in to the HDMI connector, thanks.

As an addition, YouTube video plays fine, it is my ripped movies, mp4, that do not show video.

VLC, FileBrowser, streaming from OneDive, all the same.
