HDPC Not Supported

When I try to watch media on my 2nd generation Apple TV, and error appears saying my HDMI cable does not support HDCP. First of all, what is HDCP? Second, why is it happening? I have been able to watch without error with the same TV and no change it setup.

HDCP = High Definition Copy Protection

There are 3 possible problems here, either your HDMI cables suck, your TV doesn't support HDCP (meaning its old) or some other competent in the signal chain doesn't support al of HDCP.


The reason no else answered your post is lack of DETAILs. Tell us exactly how your system is set up and every component, brand, make, and model. We can't help you without that info bc there are a million variations. Sometimes people will go out of their way to help if you give us us all your info.

Try powering off the TV and Apple TV. Unplug the HDMI cable at both ends and then push it firmly back in again. Then turn the TV on first, and ATV afterwards. This has been known to fix the odd glitch.

As to why it was working and now it's not, well try that first. Another reason is it depends on content you are watching. iTunes sourced movies have DRM that require HDCP. If you were watching movies you got elsewhere before, they may not need it.

If you are connecting to the TV using HDMI, then the TV almost certainly supports HDCP. However in the early days of HDCP there were some TVs that didn't do it well, or where it failed after a while.
