I am aware that support for HDR/Dolby Atmos etc is coming in Catalina but what about those of us who use external HDR monitors? Has anyone tried? Does Mac OS now support HDR or have they nerfed it only for movies?

I don't have a HDR monitor so I can't try. But the new Apple monitor is HDR, so there is some hope.

Plus QuickTime Player in Catalina will properly convert HDR to SDR so playback on a non HDR monitor will at least have the right colors.

but does that mean it will detect an external HDR monitor and use it either in just movies or both movies, media and desktop.

That’s new in Catalina

So the entire OS is now HDR and will play HDR content from iTunes I’d you have an external hdr monitor? That’s a save for everyone with pre 2018 machines if so.
