I read some of the posts immediately following the release of the imac about how the glossy screens might cause some eye strain.

What can I do to minimize this? Right now I'm using my 24" imac at its lowest brightness setting, and I changed the gamma to 2.2 - it still seems exceedingly bright to me. I've got three different lamps going in my room and I have two windows - so its not like I'm sitting in the dark with the imac as my only source of illumination.

I used the imac last night when I got it for about 2 hours and again this morning, and both times I had a dull unfamiliar pain around my eyes after I used it. Is this something I will get used to? A fluke? Hypochondria?

This is not good news. Did you experience headaches before on a matte display? I have seen other threads on this theme that have links to eye specialists and the health hazards of using glossy displays, which is basically, you shouldn't use them! However, I think this is the case on all displays to be honest.

I think it may help if you change your viewing habits. Make sure you have an eye break every 40 seconds or so, where you can look away from the screen for a few seconds, to something further away. Try doing this over the same period of time, i.e 2 hours or so and see if it is an improvement.

I guess one of the problems with using glossy displays is that people are likely to turn down all lighting in the room to minimise reflection, which is the worst thing you can do, a well lit room will be better for your eyes than a dark room with a glaring monitor.

My old home setup was a 15" TiBook on an iCurve stand to bring it up to the proper eye level - and I can look at that thing all day.

At work I have an intel mac mini with a Dell 1905FP matte dispaly under six flourescent tubes - and I can use that for hours on end as well.

I just know they're gonna screw me on a restocking fee. I'd love to just get a mini and a dell display at this point and be done with it - use a combo I know works fine for me already.
