last nite, was running bootcamp, and realized that my headphone jack emits a red glow (similar to an optical out glow) when in xp, but not os x.

anyone care to offer any insights?

It isn't similar to an optical out glow....it is an optical out glow. If you search for this topic then you will find lots of posts with the solution.

As said, if you find it annoying, there are solutions, but basically XP is keeping the optical output hiding in your headphone port on all the time, while OSX doesn't unless you're using it (I think). It's not harmful in any way, regardless.

It's like Balmer says...Media Player 11 is just so hot....not.

its the optical output of your sound card. If you want to disable it in winxp you have to do it in the audio controls in the control panel. You just turne SPDIF off.
