Headphone jack question

I've got an iBook. Most recent revision. Want more, look in my sig.

The question I have is this: when I have my iPod earbuds plugged into the jack, I sometimes hear this whine in the left earbud and it'll lower in pitch until it's gone. It's almost as if the iPod earbud had some air in it and it's escaping through a tiny hole.

Is this something to do with the way the headphone jack is powered? Or is it my jack going out over time or is it my earbuds wearing out? Or none of the above?

My best advice? Try another pair of headphones. I don't see how that would possibly be a problem with your computer, so I wouldn't worry. Sounds more like a headphones issue. As always, make sure it's plugged all the way in to start .

If the other headphones still do it, then you might want to call your local apple store.

Tried it with other headphones. There's nothing noticeable.

It may just be my iPod earbuds. They've been going strong for about 3 years now. Not bad for some cheap throw-ins with a product. I'll have to see if they make any noise with my iPod today.

Glad to hear it. Those little headphones just tend to wear out over time. I'm sure you can pick up more at an apple store if you really want another pair. If not there, then radio shack or somewhere will have something really similar.

Except for the fact that if I want new Apple earbuds, I'd have the buy the worthless FM tuner too. Guess I'll keep an eye out at different stores to see what they're selling each week.

ah, crazy apple people. They're good for the big things, but little things like replacement headphones and the like can be a bit of a pain to get. Good luck finding a good enough replacement. If you're on the road alot, might want to consider some headphones that enclose around your ears instead. You might look a little nutty, but they bring music to a whole new quality. I bought some noise-cancelling Sony's myself. I use them on the road, and then my altec lansings when im at my desk. Either way, enjoy.

Get a pair of Sony EX71. It is a huge improvment in sound quality over the Apple
earbud. My wife who is far from being an audiophiile thought the Apple earbuds were
good and had zero interest in switching. She tried the EX71 and instantly said "these are better".

There may be even better ones but the price goes up quickly. the ex71 is about $35 at Best Buy ad the like, less at Amazon and about $50 at the Apple store..

Don't mean to be a bother, but if you decide you want the Apple pack-ins, let me know. I have the set that came with my 5G and I am pretty sure that I will never use them. If it wasn't for the packing method, they'd still be sealed in the plastic pouch. email/pm me.

Haha, sorry. To clear that last one up, I don't use any headphones while driving. I'm just in airports and etc. fairly often and that's what I meant. Basically any time I'm not sitting at my desk, I use the headphones.
