I need new headphones for my ipod i love rock and dance music i am looking for over the ear and in-ear both types. what do you all sugest. price does not matter.

etymotic research makes really great headphones, definitely check out the er-4 and the hf-5 models. However, they are not know for their bass, it's pretty good but not the best in the industry.

Buying the best headphones is not a matter of spending the most. I have the mid-range Grado SR325 and love them to bits but I would never go on the street with them because they are too unwieldy for that. When out and about I use the iGrado that are plastic and cheap because they are efficient, sound good, have a short cord and are disposable in case of damage or loss. Their only failing is that they do not have a built-in mic and remote but I got over that by using a Griffin accessory.
I'm sorry, but I politley disagree.
First off, I owned a pair and returned them. The frequency response is great for the bass, but however for higher treble frequencies, they lack. This was my experience, and I had the white $249 pair.
Honestly, for the price, the Apple In-Ear headphones have a great mid,passable low, and nice high frequency response, and are the best for the type of person who listens to all types of music, plus, they are realitivly inexpensive, and are perfectly capable of being carried around all day.

It's going to be hard to find good advice on headphones on the ultra-high end because most people can't afford one pair, let alone enough to compare and see what works for them. My guess is that most people here have only tried a few pairs and are just suggesting whatever they own.
If I wanted noise cancellation and/or something to take to the gym I would get in-ear monitors, if I wanted generally good sound when in a quiet room I would get open headphones ("audiophile"), and if I wanted to monitor (edit) sound I'd get closed headphones ("monitors")... Past that point, it's personal preference, mostly.
I've owned (and liked) a few low and mid-end headphones: the Sennheiser HD280, which have boring but highly accurate sound; the HD497, which have good bass but are a bit tinny; the Grado SR80i, which are very inaccurate but make bad recordings and really dense recordings sound good and warm; the shure e4, which sound good and block tons of noise; the ultimate ears 10, which sound slightly better maybe and block lots of noise?
They all sound fine to me. None sound great all the time. Anything that's well-liked and higher end than those (none of what I posted above is very fancy; I always get cheaper stuff since I break it so fast) should sound good, but at that level it's all application-specific. You're paying a lot of money. Make sure you're getting what you want... I've tried other comparable models, too (Sony, Audio Technica, Sennheiser, Grado, etc.) and they all sound good in their own way. (I have a sneaking suspicion Grados have the worst sound quality but they sound subjectively really good, it's weird.)
Best for the money are JVC marshmallows and Sony V150s... It's all depreciating returns past that point.
I have Shure SE530's as my daily phones. They are ok, I expected magic and got meh, but their customer service is outstanding (I crushed a set in a car door and they sent me a replacement set for <<50% of MSRP). For customer service alone Shure's are worth a look. For much less money the Etymotic's sound damn good too.
Over the ear, I like Senn's but they are power hungry and sound much better with an amp.
Stay away from Beats by Dre. They are all marketing, very little acoustical goodness.

If price really isn't an issue, get the JH13 Pro by JH Audio. Jerry Harvey is an engineer & was a co-founder of Ultimate Ears but left before Logitech bought them. The JH13 has 6 drivers: dual low, dual mid & dual high. I have not heard the JH16 Pro, which costs $50 more & adds an additional pair of low drivers. If you don't want customs, try the Shure SE535 or any of the following by Westone: UM2, 2, or 3 (depending on the sound signature you desire).
