Hello Ladies and Gentlemen,

New iPhone user here. I'm finding that the Health app falsely reports a lot of steps and miles when I'm not actually walking. So, this morning, for example, I apparently "walked" about 1 mile ... while I was substantially stationary and merely playing with the phone's settings. I see this kind of thing happening every day. I'm wondering just what it thinks are all these thousands of steps. Is it picking up tiny movements from my pulse while it's in my hands or something?

On the other hand, when I actually do take walks, I find that it reports something that is at least plausible (still seems a little high, but at least it's not completely crazy).

Because of all the weirdness, I don't feel much trust in it.

So, what's up with all the false steps, and how do I trust it or interpret it's results when I'm actually walking?

Thank you.

I have the opposite in the Summary of Activity User Interface (UI). Steps and distance are not live streamed or updated for very long periods of time ( 60 minutes to 4 hours). When I dig down to Data Collected all the steps and distances are in fact collected but not being updated to Summary page. Have seen 3 or 4 others reporting the same issue as mine over in Apple Support Community. Case Files have been filed with Apple. From what I see, Apple does not know about this issue as per Tech Support.
Note: I upgraded to iOS 12 until this issue was discover and then downgrade to iOS 11.4.1 and the problem was solved

I see that the health app logged part of my bike ride yesterday as walking distance/steps. I had the phone in my pocket as usual, but I never noticed this much activity on a bike ride in the previous os.

Its nearly 9:30 this morning, I work from home, so my only movements have been bedroom, to my home office, to the kitchen (for coffee) and I have nearly a 1/2 mile already. Happens all the time, even though I only get up from time to time to get a cup of coffee or let the dog out

Just off from a chat with Apple Tech Support. They had no idea of this issue before now. Have provided them all the details including rolling back to iOS 11.4.1 SOLVED the issue.
They say it has been escalated so . . Hope it is fixed in one of the updates to iOS 12.X

Each morning I take a short train ride to work. It’s logged as walking every single time.

Yesterday at the gym the calories burnt are in sync with the thread mill but the calories burnt on the cross trainer are way too off
