are there any heart rate straps that pair directly to the watch, and automatically reconnect each time it is used?

Tried Polar H10 and Wahoo, both disconnect when an activity is complete and do not reconnect.

Instead of a heart rate strap, have you looked at 12South's armband? I have one and it puts the watch up on your bicep, and for me the heart rate tracking is much better during my weightlifting sessions. Amazon has them on sale for $15. https://www.amazon.com/Twelve-South...696&sr=8-2&keywords=12+south+apple+watch&th=1

Note: Not affiliated with 12South in anyway, just recommending a product of theirs that I like. :)

I use a Wahoo Tickr-X for virtually all gym activities, weights, cardio, and classes, and it never misses a beat. Beautiful data. For less strenuous activities, or impromptu thoughts, like A hike along a trail I didn't know existed, or Mall Walks, I use a Scosche Rhythm+, probably the very best optical heart rate reader out there. I've used these two with Suunto's, Garmins, and now the Apple watch, and yes, I do have to reconnect each time I put it on, but it's a simple procedure, and I'm in the Bluetooth area of the watch anyway, connecting whatever headphone/earbuds I have on at the time, so it's a non-issue.

Can the Tickr-X measure heart rate continuously over many hours? Providing detailed stats to iPhone (and maybe Watch)?
(Almost 24/7 rather than for cardio bursts. I am disabled/housebound and mostly carry my iPhone.)

Thanks I’m advance.:)

If you get a good heart rate monitor strap like a Polar, Suunto etc., they can read 24/7, provided you have a good connection on your chest with the strap. The Scosche can only go about 8hrs before it needs to be recharged. I am not sure about the Tickr-X. The battery in the monitor can last several months or more, depending on how much you are using the heart rate monitor.

edited to add: It is best to use the heart rate strap with an iPhone and not the Apple Watch, if continuous hours is what you need.

I use an Ifit HR strap when running but I do have to connect it each time for some odd reason.
