Hi guys,

just played around with the new image file format (HEIF) and it doesn't seem to work...

Settings:
iPhone 7+ with iOS 11.1.1
Camera settings -> Formats -> High Efficiency

Took a bunch of photos of the same motive in exactly the same conditions while having the phone
connected to my MacBook and viewing the pics with ImageCapture at the same time.
"High Efficiency" shows always slightly larger file sizes then the "Most Compatible" mode...
And the file extension is always jpg...

Anyone an idea whats going on?

Cheers, Daniel

It works if your Mac supports HEIF decoding. If it doesn't, the most compatible mode transfers a jpeg instead.
Disable most compatible and it will force HEIF image transfer but you may not be able to open it without a compatible image viewer.

Thank you for your reply.
My MacBook is running High Sierra, so that should actually work, right?

Where do you mean "Disable most compatible"?

I took photos with "Most Compatible" and ImageCapture shows them as jpegs.
Then I took the same photos with "High Efficiency" but ImageCapture still shows them as jpegs, and
curiously larger file size...

There are two settings in iOS. In the camera settings, you can select high efficiency (HEIF) or most compatible (JPG). Choose high efficiency to capture using HEIF.
Then, in the photos app settings, there is a transfer settings on the bottom. Choose 'keep originals' to force HEIF transfer to your Mac.

I just tried this with my Mac using image transfer and it works for me.
