Did they change the AutoCorrect for hell/he'll?

I've noticed that at least for me, the AutoCorrect no longer tries to change hell to he'll. That one really drove me up the wall. I don't recall where I've ever typed he'll on my iPhone (intentionally).

I guess this means I type hell alot on my iPhone, and will probably burn in he'll for it.

I believe it learns from itself and will change once you have corrected it a certain number of times. By the way, I use he'll more...

Yep, they actually changed it to not autocorrect "hell" to "he'll". I'm with you, OP...I probably shouldn't, but I use hell all the time when texting and the autocorrect drove me crazy changing it.

It's a welcome change, that's for sure!

Yeah, it does that and has done that for many words for me. But for some reason, it never "learned" to not autocorrect the hell/he'll...at least not for me (until iOS 5).

Just wondering if anyone else has noticed the same thing?

That is weird, i noticed that too. I wish it was like shell and she'll. It doesnt switch, BUT if you type shelll with 3 L's, it will auto correct to she'll. And I like that because it is faster.

However if you type helll, it switches it to hello. Frustrating!

I'm still looking forward to updating to ios5. As soon as jailbreak is out.

I would somewhat agree but every once in awhile you will get an auto correct from a one time use.

For example my fiance's last name ends in a t, and ONE SINGLE time i put a bunch of extra t's on the end. Now i can't write her last name without it trying to auto correct to the version with a bunch of t's.

That's a good tip. I had already known about and have been goofing around with the Shortcuts (i.e. ugh=I love you too, sweetheart.). But I didn't notice until I read the article that the Shortcut field itself was optional and that typing in a word in the Phrase field by itself adds it to the dictionary. Very nice. I suppose "I love you too, sweetheart." is technically an entry in the dictionary now?

Too bad this doesn't fix AlphaVictor87's issue of having a errant word being automatically assimilated into the dictionary that doesn't need to be there. I have also had this happen and wish I could clean out the assimilated typos from the dictionary individually (without resetting the dictionary as starting over from scratch).

I have noticed quite a few autocorrect changes in iOS 5. It can be tricky when you get used to certain things. This change you mentioned it seems like it looks at the context of the sentence. If I type "I don't know if hell" it autocorrects hell to he'll. Most other sentences I tried leave hell as hell. If you type "or hell" it also autocorrects to he'll.

Whoa...I think you're on to something. Kudos to Dave! I just tried typing "If you go to hell, he'll be there." It did not try to autocorrect the first hell, but it did autocorrect the second hell to he'll. Now that is impressive.

Actually, that is quite an amazing improvement if they changed the autocorrect to also look at context as well (assuming this is new).

yeah, but auto correcting a word that's not a bad word is annoying. If you use he'll more just type he'll, if you mean hell, it shouldn't change it to he'll.

One thing I think is cool is the new shortcuts for common phrases though. I wonder if that will work for the real bad words.

Cool, I had not seen this! Just tried it for hell and it works for that along with several other 4-letter words that I don't think I can type in this forum.

Actually it does fix it!! i never noticed that the bottom "shortcut" field was optional!

I just put in her last name as the phrase and it got rid of the version with all the extra t's!
