Hi!

Someone gave me their old iphone when they bought a new model.
The one they gave me is one of the very first ones they sold, he stood in line and got one the day they came out. And of course he paid a lot of money for it. Silly.

Anyway.. So now he has a new one. He took his SIM card out of his old iphone and put it in the new one and he was good to go.

So I have his old phone but it has no SIM card in it.

He told me I can put my SIM card from my Nokia in it and use it on Centennial Wireless after I "jailbreak" and "unlock" it.

I have found software for doing that but the thing I don't understand is, do I have to have an AT&T SIM card first to do all this? Or can I just pop mine in then do all the unlocking/breaking stuff and be good to go?

I've never messed with SIM card stuff or phone hacking before. I'm sure I can do it but I just want to know if I can do it without having his AT&T SIM card?

Thanks so much! :)

You don't need an ATT sim card, just put in your current one, jailbreak/unlock, and start using it.

Cool! Thank you!

Ok, one more dumb question.

I see the terms millions of times and I know I need to do them to the phone but I have no idea what they mean. I know, I know..

But can someone please tell me what Jailbreak and unlock actually mean?
I'm really trying to learn and understand what I'm doing. I don't want to be just another dummy that only knows to click on what she's told. I really want to learn and understand the whole process.

Inquiring minds want to know.. ;)

Thank you! :D

Jailbreaking is gaining root acess to the iPhone, and being able to install Apps you cannot find in the App Store, as well as other cool mods/hacks (like themes). Unlocking is bing able to use the iPhone on any GSM Network (Like T-Mobile).

The main advantage of Jailbreaking is Cydia, which is an open source alternative to the App Store. :)

Ah! Ok, very cool info! Thank you very much!
It all makes much more sense now. I feel a little less dumby today.. :D

So I for 100% sure want to do both. Yep.. For sure!

I'd reccomend using QuickPwn. There are Mac and Windows versions available. Don't worry, those are offical Torrents from The iPhone Dev-Team. :)

It's easy to use, and you should be Jailbroken and unlocked in no time.

If you're a Mac user, are you running 10.5.6? And do you have the firmware file for your phone on your computer? The one you used with iTunes to update to whatever version you're on?

hi!

I have a home made Mac on an old dell that an old bf made for me a few years ago, I think it's running 10.4.8

I tried to update it once and trashed it, he had to re-do it all over from scratch so I'm afraid to mess with it since he's no longer around to fix it again. I had been warned to leave updates alone. :(

The itunes on it is 6.0.2

I do have access to a windows XP machine if I have to use one. I don't like windows because I get burned every time I use it. I hate windows.

I also use an OpenSuse 11.1 machine as my main workstation but I don't think it will run itunes.

As to the phone, I don't have it in my hands yet, it's bouncing around in the back of a United Package Smashers (UPS) truck at the moment on it's way to me. The guy that is giving it to me lives a long way off so he had to ship it to me.

He never did anything to it ever, he used it strictly by the rules and never messed with hacking it at all. He said all he did was delete everything, charge it, turn it off, pull the SIM out and ship it to me.

I am getting the cables, chargers, belt clip thingies, silicone skin thing, and a battery backpack thing for it that keeps it going past it's normal usage.

I'm hoping I can transfer all my Nokia stuff into it like names, numbers, pictures, ring tones, mp3's, etc.. I've had it a few years and it's pretty full..

Hope that's not TMI.. :D

Thanks! :)

It was just there's a problem with 10.5.6 that slows the process down, that's all! :p

Oh ok, cool!

So I'm pretty much good to go once it gets here. I've downloaded all the proggies so now I'm just playing the waiting game and hoping United Package Smashers gets it here in one piece.

And thank you for being helpful! Most places totally do not, like on the Linux forums peeps totally ignore me, it's like talking to a brick wall. I guess they think I'm intruding on sacred ground. eh..

Ok, thank you again! ;)

Oh, one other thing, sorry to be a pest but I don't know where else to ask,

Will it be possible for me to buy/download apps from the real Apple.com store into my phone, I will be using it on Centennial Wireless, not the Death Star network. Oh and of course it will be jailbroken and unlocked, of course.. :D

Thanks again!

Centennial is now owned by AT&T. In two months, you'll be using AT&T, and they'll change whatever plan you have to the iPhone plan.

Yes, if you're unlocked/jailbroken, you can still sync completely with iTunes. Just make sure you don't click the Restore button. (Or the update)

You'll still be able to buy and use Apple App Store apps as usual.

And no problem ;)

OMG...

Their service is terrible around here. You can not use ANY AT&T cell phone indoors, anywhere around here, not even inside a wood frame house.

My house has a metal roof and my phone works *everywhere* I have ever taken it, even inside fully metal buildings. And I have free incoming calls 24/7..

Now I won't be able to use my phone in the house anymore.

Not to mention, they are the Big Brother network. I don't like that at all.

Why can't people leave stuff alone?

You can't make a call indoors!? I thought not being able to use 3G or Edge indoors was bad... :(

Can't do it indoors in this area if you have AT&T...

And my bf can only find a few small spots of 3G service in the entire county on his brand new black berry. He said it's terrible around here, like being in a 3rd world country.

I'm scared to think what's going to happen when teh evil overlords take control of Centennial.

I've liked Centennial, the service has been really great and it works 100% every single place I have ever gone, the only time I lost signal ever was after hurricane Rita and hurricane Ike. We lost service for a few days then it was spotty for a few weeks while they repaired stuff.

You can always tell who has AT&T here, they are the ones pacing around the front yard talking on their cell phones. Peeps with a real carrier talk indoors like it's 2009..

I don't expect I'll have internet on my phone but that's ok, I can still use it on my wifi at home and other places, that's good enough for me.

I'm just sooooo  about teh evil Death Star taking over... They consume everything. I thought that had been made illegal..

Wheeeee!!

I have a working iphone now!

I did the jailbreak and unlock stuff and it works!
I had trouble with the button gymnastics routine, it kept telling me to press and release buttons in some weird routine and I was confused by that but it let me try several times and I finally got it right. That part was no fun.

So I installed a bunch of stuff, apps I guess, and now I'm trying to get the hang of it.

I can't get it to recognize my motorola bluetooth headset at all. No big deal, I need a new one anyway, it falls off all the time.

The other thing I can't figure out is how to copy movies and stuff over to it or how to play them when they get there. Is there a forum somewhere for iphone dummies?

Thanks guys for all your help! ;)

Yay! :D

That's DFU mode, something Apple put in. It's mainly for restoring iPhones/iPods. You'll get the hang of it ;)

There are some great Jailbreak apps. There's a thread somewhere around here with the best ones.

You *have* to use iTunes to put movies/music on. You can find them in the iPod app. There are other ways of adding them, put it's a pain in the butt!

No problem! If you need any assistance, I'm sure if you PM one of us we'll be happy to help :)
