Hi,

I've noticed that my internal CD drive has stopped
reading/recognizing CD disks when they are put in the
internal drive. If I put a disk in, nothing shows.
The drive does open and close as usual when I push the
manual control on it.

I am running OS 10.2.8. I am running on a 400mz
G4 of the Yikes (PCI gaphics) model with 704 mg RAM.

When I restart in OS 9.2.2 (which is also on my hard
disk) the internal CD works fine, and reads disks
normally.

So this is not a hardware fault, as far as I know.

I have already run Norton Systemworks 3, Disk Warrior, and Disk
Utility (including fixing all permissions), and the problem remains. I've even used compressed air to make sure the drive is clean.

My question is: Does anyone have any suggestion as to
1. Can you think of a way figuring this out and fixing
it?
2. If that doesn't work, what else should I do?
(please don't tell me do a clean reinstall of OX10.2
except as a last resort).

Thanks!

Well, you have enough to conclude that the drive is not the problem. Its the mostly the OS's problem. Check and see if there is a drive firmware update for the drive to work in OSX. Other than that, I would have to ask, did this happen after an update? If so, check apples forums with people with the same problem. Then, it would mean a reinstall of the OS, and update to the point that it broke or all the way if it didn't happen just after an update.

Suggestion, don't use the Norton stuff, Diskwarrior is good, but you really only need to use Disk Utility with repairing preferrences. Its not like a PC where you need to defrag, scan disk, and all the other stuff.

When I got my G5 last year with Panther, it wouldn't recognize audio CDs. DVDs and data CDs, no problem. It seemed like something with user preferences. Since it was a new machine with nothing (realy) installed, I re-installed the OS and haven't had a problem since.
