i just bought a 2011 mac mini.the only cord i have now is a HDMI cord (won't be able to get to an apple store or purchase an adapter for 2 days).I plugged it up, started. i see that the apple logo appears then the screen goes black and i cant see anything. any solutions or tricks that i can use to simply set up the mini?

I would hold Command+Option+A+V while starting up. This will reset the display settings.

It seems the Mac Minis have a problem selecting the appropriate resolution.

If that does not work;

Turn off the Mac
Turn off the TV
Turn on the Mac
Wait about 3 minutes and turn on the TV.

Absolutely not! Monitor should be turned ON before turning mac on.

Obviously, for whatever reason, mac mini video output is set to MiniDP, that is why you don't see anything on HDMI. I have no idea why it happened. Try to get MiniDP cable or adapter and check if it works.

Or the best option would be return mac mini to Apple Store for checking or replace.
