My 5,1 was freezing every few seconds on video, so I figured I'd restart it. But after hitting restart, it won't start back up... stuck on the "chiming" phase: one loud (normal) chime, followed up a soft chime every 3 seconds.

Reading that it might be RAM, I removed all the DIMMS and just tried 2 pieces at a time, but none of them worked.

Sometimes I get a gray screen, sometimes black.

Have also tried to do a PRAM reset but to no avail. Also did SMC reset.

Any ideas for trouble shooting would be welcome and appreciated.

It has a Radeon 7950 (flashed).

Pull the GPU and listen if it still has a chime loop.

If not the GPU gone south.
Does appear to be GPU related, but not sure where/what. chimes on one port but not the other. Swapped cables (dp->mdp), now works "sometimes". HDMI cables work all the time.

So, not sure if it's the mdp ports on the GPU, or the dp input on the monitor... but not gonna spend any more time for now... 30Hz sucks on the HDMI, but it's not my daily driver anyway... just happy it's not dead dead (at least for now).

Thanks @Macschrauber for the suggestion on looking at the gpu.

I have seen Display Port Monitors preventing startup. Try setting down the Display Port Version on the Monitor's GUI to the lowest possible.
