Hello,

I doing a university/college brief where we have to look at the lyrics of two songs from two different decades and present them typographically (using appropriate typography to the time the song was written) ...i'm doing a motion piece.

I wondered if anyone could help with some influences/themes for either decade?

this is what I've come up with so Far.

1960s (the song is Blackbird by the Beatles)

THEMES
Clean design
Highly legible
Bold
Restrained

MAJOR TALENTS
Saul Bass (print and motion)

1990s (the song is Down Rodeo by Rage Against the Machine)

THEMES
Deconstructing type
At the brink of being illegible
Bold (colours?)
Not restrained

MAJOR TALENTS
David Carsons
Jonathan Barnbrooke
Karl Cooper (motion)

Thanks... Any help would be great

well, i think it is fitting that helvetica is used for the 60's theme, as that changed marketing and everything in the late 50's (even to this day you see it used everywhere!), and for the 90's, i would use something like didot. I would just experiment in indesign with the fonts and see what will work. Didot fits Carsons' work pretty well. Also messing with the kerning of the letters in the font Didot and it will work pretty well, i think. I used didot for a paper on David Carson this last semester and my typography professor loved it.

Ugh. Carson.

(*shudders*)

The man had no graphic design experience, fell bass-ackwards into the field, and singlehandedly changed typography the way that we know it.

He's also a bit of a d*** who hasn't contributed much to the design world since about 1995.

That being said, DIN is one of his favorite fonts, and one I very much associate with him. And personal feeling aside, I am very much in awe of his use of typography.

Damnit.

As for the 60s, I *love* some of Saul Bass' opening sequences for movies.

Good luck. And feel free to share your final project with us. I, for one, would love to see what all you come up with.

cool thanks guys.

yeah, this is what i've come up with so far for the 1960's side. (it's a work in progress and youtube seems to have squashed it) I stop motioned all the text and comped it in after effects.

I'm going to roughly base the 1990's side on se7en by karl cooper.

It's a general typography project based on the lyrics from two songs. Both my songs are about race the first from the 1960s is more peaceful, written around the time of Martin Luther Kings death (and one of my favourite songs ever) and the one from the 1990s is more violent (down rodeo seems to have links to the rodney king riots.)

actually I have to hand this in on tuesday morning so I'm in a bit of rush to finish it... but it's also for a competition so if it's showing potential i'll develop it up after that date.

any thoughts so far?

thanks
