I just got my OWC kit to add a second drive to my brand new (late 2012) MacMini.

I am adding a Samsung 840 250GB SSD which I will want to boot from. The existing 1TB hard drive will then be my data drive. That is the plan!

Currently the MacMini is booting from the slow 1TB drive. My question is will I need to put the SSD where the current 1TB is?

Or can I presumably make it easier for myself by just adding the SSD to the spare slot and still be able to use it as a boot drive?

Thanks!

You can put it in any "slot" OSX lets you choose the boot drive.

Just a hint though, put the hottest drive(1TB) in the place where it's most likely to get good cooling.

Thanks for the answer. Which is the coolest spot then?

I put a 750GB Scorpio Black which is a 7200rpm drive in the bottom spot with my 512GB SSD at the top as the bottom is nearer the exhaust, the jury's out on this but I did notice it jump up to 90 deg C the other day, it never did that when I just had the SSD installed.

SMC fan control brought the temp down though.

Your guess would be as good as mine, I never studied engineering :(
