Help. After booting with startup disk can't find hd

I have an iMac 27" and think my hd is done but don't really know the problem. Any help and/or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Try starting up from the supplied grey install disk by holding C down while you start your mac. then navigate to the disk utilities and see if a HD is picked up there.
If so, then go first aid, then repair.
Just don't panic and take your time.

I was able to use the startup disk to boot it. Once it loaded I could not find the hd under disk utility, only the startup disk. I also tried to reinstall osx but it could not find the hd to install.
