Hi nooby here. My 7yr old Pc laptop has died on me. I am thinking of getting an iMac but people keep trying to talk me out of it saying the cost is too much. Probably about double in the UK. Would use it mainly for Photoshop.

Please can anyone give me any advice and/or guidance as to why I should buy mac over pc.

In your person case, there's no real reason at all to get a Mac over a PC (unless you consider the fact that Adobe originally made Photoshop for the Mac).

If you can't afford a Mac, or can't justify the cost, just buy a PC and get yourself a large, hi-res display.

Oh, and please don't generalise your titles, your thread title should've been "Why should I buy a Mac for Photoshop Vs. PC?".

A) Ok thanks for the initial thoughts. For me it is not necessarily about money. That is what everyone else is telling me. I thought this was a forum for all to use for the questions they wanted answered.

B)no need to put things in bold type. Thanks anyway.
 
The iMac is better than any PC available in my opinion. Although mine suffers from an annoying hard drive noise, the performance is great and you can't beat the look. I have PS CS4 installed on it, and it's a great machine to work with.

Thanks, this is the type of response I was looking for. I need opinions from people that actually use the machines. I have read many a review but don't know anyone who has one. Thanks again.

Honestly, when you price it. For what you get in an all-in-one computer it's only a couple hundred dollars more than the competitors and there displays aren't as good. I'm am a little biased tho i have a 27" i5 :p
 
You don't really need or benefit from Mac if your main usage is Photoshop as it's available for PC and actually, is better for PC (got 64-bit earlier etc). Your current PC is 7 years old, that's ancient! A new PC, even a cheapish one is like 100000 times faster, so no matter what you pick, it will be a great improvement.

Go to an Apple Store and play around with the iMac and other Macs. Personally, I would just get a PC even though I have an iMac and love it. Another thing you may want to consider is the glossy display in iMacs. If Photoshop is work related and color accuracy is crucial, the iMac ain't that good buy due the display. However, Mini plus 3rd party monitor isn't a bad option.
 
I'd have to agree with techapocalypse, the display on these things are amazing. I'm also a designer/architect and do my work on my 27' i7 and its *really* nice to have so much screen real estate. Once I priced out the display and the components, in the end it was actually comparable if not better than the other all-in-ones.

Cost is not a concern. My fears are Windows is totally crap and slows the computer down beyond belief and then you have go all the virus protection and spyware software, and again this all slows down the computer as I really will be multiple-tasking and using multiple applications. I have rea the the mac does not need virus software, therefore frees up speed?

Anything on 7 years old PC will be slow, you can't compare it to a brand new PC. Todays antivirus software isn't that bad, most of them doesn't slow down the system at all because computers are so powerful. You can get a quad core PC for less than 1000$ and then use decent virus software that doesn't eat up all resources. It'll be lightning fast. Faster than any iMac.

It's true that Macs don't need that kind of software but viruses haven't been an issue for years if you're a wise user. Just look at what you download and avoid suspicious sites.
