Hi i know there may be other threads but i am really looking for a clear answer to my personal uses and i know you people have an amazing amount of knowledge on the subject ,

i have been reading these forums for quite a while now wanting to buy a Mac at the first stages i was interested in buying the basic 21.5" model before the refresh but after coming on here and seeing there was an update soon i changed my mind. While i was waiting visiting apple shop and stuff i really started to like the 27" model and now i am going from their.

The first thing i am going to say is the i7 is out of the question my budget ends at the new i5 once it hits refurb and thats a big push i dont have an income as i am 15 and it has taken a reasonable amount of time to save as i have gone from the base model as first intended which i was set on to now the 27" model.

Now i am posting this today because the old i5 has been lowered in the refurb store here in the UK. This is good for me as the i5 before the update i thought was out of the question due to budget but now it is a choice or it will be the new i3 maybe i5 refurb with a bigger push as i have already said.

Now at the moment i am using a HP Pavilion DV6000 and it has a geekbench of around 700 which im sure is low and now as i am doing more youtube videos i am looking for something better i still can edit my videos on this but its a little slow.

At the moment i am just editing in standard definition but i will probably buy a flip ultra hd in time and use that and i will use iMovie and i will of course be doing the holiday videos and the like. Is this basic editing because i always thought of it in that way.

I will be using Gimp which im sure is not demanding.

Iweb to create a website.

I will basic edit my photos using iPhoto

I do NOT game so that is not an issue because i have my Xbox 360 for that and it will stay that way for me unless i buy sims which is not for sure.

Now for encoding a video am i correct in saying that this is when you rip a dvd and then transfer it to another format like so i could play it on my ipod touch then i do this but not often i often buy from itunes but if i do do it then i am not worried with minutes difference in between different models because i can easily leave it overnight and then its done that is no problem

as for how long i want it too last well i would want it too last a few years if i could get 4 years out of i would be extremely happy as i could also upgrade ram when i have the extra money to give it a boost i guess my current is nearly around that age i believe. Most of the time i just browse the internet do school work and then i have my hobby of Youtube and basic editing but only basic like cutting frames from a video. I hope you guys can help me find the model that is suited to me. Many Thanks. George:D
 
You should really edit your post for clarity and formatting, otherwise you aren't going to attract the knowledgeable users you seek.
 
George, not sure if others will have this same issue, but it is hard to read your post because it is one big paragraph.

Can you break it down so we can see your questions and be able to address each one? :eek:

Any C2D or i3 or i5 model will more than suffice your needs.

Basic editing is not dependent on the format - SD or HD - but on the levels of cuts and effects and all the post production schnickschnack.

Any current C2D will encode your video in less than two hours, my 2GHz C2D from 2007 takes 90 minutes for a feature length film encoding.

You can easily get four years out of your iMac, just make sure you buy some kind of warranty like Apple Care to have coverage of manufacturing defects after the first year. You can buy Apple Care within the first year of possession of the new iMac.

Btw, I was so kind to format your post a bit, as it was really hard to read without paragraphs, breaks and punctuation.

Yes. Absolutely yes. I do all that (or have done it - DVDs) with my 2.0GHz iMac from 2007 with no problems. Sometimes I get hiccups, but that is due to the HDD.

Btw, get an external HDD for backups.
 
Yeah i will be sure to pick up a External Hard Drive. Would not want to loose all of my files.:)
 
Looks like you got the answers that you need.

I always look for good deals after a new model comes out, and the savings are more than worth it. IMHO.

Yeah i couldn't believe it this morning when i looked at the prices. I have heard people say that the display is around £1,000 alone so i am getting a quad core i5 and all the other components for £269 which is great i guess.
 
Just ordered the iMac 27" 2.66 GHz Quad Core. This should easily do my tasks and hopefully as said for a years to come. Thanks for your help guys. Just to add it said estimated delivery 30th July to 3rd August. Based on what you have experienced before or heard when do you think it will be delivered ( nearer which date). Thanks once again. :D

Depends on where you are located in relation to the distribution center.

I ordered my refurb over a holiday weekend and it took exactly one week, Purchase to Door step. However, mine had to go across country CA -> NJ
 
Just another question when should i expect an email confirmation i am used to receiving one as soon as i confirm payment with some purchases. Is it sent when it is shipped i have printed the info on the screen order number ect but i was expecting an email.

You should receive a confirmation email sometime tonight.
I usually don't get them until a few hours after ordering.
Then another one will be sent when a tracking number is assigned to your order.
 
Ok so as you know i received my confirmation email yesterday. I have been told that i should expect an email with shipping and tracking information within 24 hrs and it has been over 24 hrs and no email just wondered whether this is normal and there is a delay from when it is actually dispatched.
 
Sorry just saw it fade to the bottom of the list and thought it was worth giving it one last go to see if anyone could help me but it will be delivered when it is delivered its as simple as that. Shouldn't have bumped it up.
