I purchased a geek squad refurbished MacBook Air M2 512GB Midnight from Best Buy last week. When it arrived everything looked good with it, mint condition, 100% battery capacity, less than 50 cycles and it still has remaining AppleCare+ until October. I can't manage the AppleCare + plan because it is set up on a recurring payment from the previous owner.

I want to be able to pay for the AppleCare+ myself once the current contract expires but Apple told me it can't be transferred without the previous owner and they can't contact them to cancel it.

I want to be able to take out my own AppleCare+ because it is basically in new condition. Should I wait until October to see if the previous owner has cancelled the recurring payment, then bring the MacBook to an Apple Store once the current policy is expired to see if they can assess it to take out AppleCare+ in my own name? Or should I just return it to BestBuy?

I got a pretty good deal on it, ($720 USD)

I'd take it in to Apple to see what they can do, whether they'd let you take on an AppleCare policy of your own. You'd have to go through them anyway to actually make use of the policy in the event of a hardware failure or mishap.

Refurbished Mac's from BestBuy are probably a different animal than other systems purchased privately where the original owner purchased AC+.

Apple has honored the AC extended warranty with whatever used system I purchased that came with it. (I've never purchased AC+ for any of my systems).

I also recently learned that original owners can request cancelation of AC+ and receive a prorated credit for the remaining warranty.
