I purchased a new Mac Pro 2X2.4MHZ, and I slapped in a new HDD, and a new optical drive. For the first few hours everything was great. Next time I sat at my computer, the drive disappeared! After a couple reboots, and a day later, low and behold, the drive is back. Any ideas, and solutions, and what is going on? I was thinking it was something to do with the sleep or screen saver, but the drives doesn't always come back after a reboot. In fact sometimes as the Mac is coming back on after a re-boot, I see a drive the an "X" over it. ( I am sure stating that my optical drive isn't working for some reason)

Please advise. getting very frustrated.

Thanks in advance.

I was thinking about taking it in, but this was a modification I did, not their so called "Genius'" Will they even talk to me about something I did outside of the warranty?

Sorry, to clarify an confusion with my initial post, the HDD I installed has always worked flawlessly. It is the optical drive seems seems to come and go out of disk utility.

Installing/changing HD's does not affect your warranty. They will check to make sure this still happens if the new drive isn't in the machine, but that's it.

But if your new optical drive is dropping, it sounds like you have a bad optical drive.

Easy test, put your old stock optical drive back in the machine and see if you still have this issue.
